The Sydney Dance Company, with seventeen top-class dancers, is Australia’s largest contemporary dance company and has been directed by Rafael Bonachela for eight years.
“★★★★ This is contemporary dance at its most evocative and beautiful…moments of sheer wonderment and unexpected emotional catharsis.” Time Out
Ab[intra] is Latin for “from within”. For Rafael Bonachela, the choreographer and artistic director of the Sydney Dance Company, the term refers primarily to the work of the dancers which consists in projecting what they feel from the inside out to an audience. The show seems to begin in a studio before exploding into duets, trios and ensembles of uncommon strength. The seventeen dancers showcase an athletic and carnal movement, with a formidable precision. Fluidity and velocity are the key words of this ballet whose phrasing is based on complex interlacing. The very lyrical music of Nick Wales, enamelled by the accents of a cello from a composition by Peteris Vask, makes the bodies vibrate like so many sensitive strings in this choreography full of energy, sensations and expressive virtuosity.
